3 SEO tips for beginners
If you’re starting to learn SEO, then you may be wondering what the heck it’s all about, why it matters, and more importantly, what you’re supposed to do. Let’s jump in and talk about SEO, and I’ll share my favorite SEO tips for beginners with you because once you figure this out, it’s going to change everything for your business.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization and what that means is the process we go through to make our websites easier for Google to understand what they’re about. Why do we need to help Google understand our websites? Well, if Google doesn’t know what our site is about, they’re less likely to show it to people when they search for information. It’s in your best interest to learn what SEO is and do it on your website.
What should a beginner do for SEO?
Great question! Here’s where my 3 SEO tips for beginners will come in handy. When you are just starting with SEO, it can feel overwhelming or confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. Focus on these three areas, and you’ll have a good foundation for your website.
- Brainstorm keywords that are related to your business. Think about the products and services you offer and the questions you answer on repeat. You will have some ideas from this brainstorm for sure.
- Research the keywords you’ve brainstormed and find the search volume and see how competitive they are to rank for. You can check competitiveness by going to Google and searching the keyword. See what shows up on page 1 and determine how similar your website is to those ranking on page 1. Be very honest with yourself during this step because choosing a keyword with lots of search volume isn’t always the best answer. You want a keyword that you can rank for too. I teach this process in-depth in my Simple SEO course but for now, start by checking out the websites that rank on Page 1 and see who’s there and how similar they are to your website. If they’re very similar, then you’re probably headed in the right direction.
- Create a website page or blog post for the keyword you want to optimize for. Add SEO-friendly copy, a Title Tag, and Meta Description to that page or blog post.
